ObviousFX Copy Image Plug-in for After Effects 6.5+
V1.1 - 5 Sept 2007

OVERVIEW

The plug-in allows a user of After Effects 6.5 or later to copy the image in the active composition window to the system clipboard, allowing the image to be pasted into other graphics applications.

The plug-in adds a "Copy Image" command to the After Effects "Edit" Menu.

To copy the active composition window, simply select the "Edit->Copy Image" command.

INSTALLATION INFORMATION (Mac)

NOTE: There are now two versions of the plug-in, one for After Effects CS3 and later, and one for After Effects v6.5 and v7.

For After Effects CS3 and later: To install, mount the disk image, and drop the "ObviousFX CopyImage.plugin" from the disk image into your After Effects Plug-ins folder.

For After Effects v6.5 and v7: To install, mount the disk image, and open the "CopyImage for AfterEffects v6.5 and v7" folder. Drop the "ObviousFX CopyImage Plug-in" from the disk image into your After Effects Plug-ins folder.

To uninstall, simply delete the "ObviousFX CopyImage Plug-in" or "ObviousFX CopyImage.plugin" from your Plug-ins folder.

INSTALLATION INFORMATION (PC)

The Copy Image installer creates an ObviousFX\General path in the After Effects Plug-ins directory, and then copies the following files into Plug-ins\ObviousFX\General:

  • CopyImage.AEX
  • CopyImageLicense.rtf
  • CopyImageReadme.rtf

To uninstall, simply delete the above files from the Plug-ins\ObviousFX\General directory.

NOTES

1. The image is copied as an 8bits per channel image. If the active project is 16 or 32bits per channel, downsampling is performed.

2. The plug-in supports After Effects 6.5 or later on Mac (PPC), After Effects CS3 or later on Mac (Intel), and After Effects 5.5 or later on PC.

3. The plug-in is implemented as a Render Hook, similar to Hardware Video Output plug-ins. The side effect is that the plug-in is called every time the composition window is rendered. However, the plug-in has been implemented so that it performs no processing unless a Copy Image has been requested. The performance impact is minimal.

4. An image copy can only be performed when the composition window is visible. The "Copy Image" menu item is enabled when there is an active composition, however if the composition window is closed or minimized, the image will not be copied until the composition window is next shown.

5. Dont paste the copied image into an email. The image is copied as an uncompressed bitmap. Emailing bitmaps is just plain rude :)
